NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A police officer is hospitalized following a motorcycle accident in Northeast Philadelphia Sunday evening.

The accident happened at approximately 5:55 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95.

Authorities say the Philadelphia Police Highway Patrol officer had just finished working at the Philadelphia Eagles game and was heading north on I-95 to the Givnish Funeral Home to pay last respects to Trooper David Kedra.

As he approached Academy Road a large unsecured ladder fell off of a vehicle in front of him, which prompted all the vehicles following to slam on their breaks.

The 41-year-old officer hit the vehicle in front of him and was ejected from the motorcycle.

He was thrown into the air and landed on a vehicle. He then rolled off the vehicle and was narrowly missed being hit by a passing car.

The officer was transported to Aria Frankford-Torresdale Hospital where he was treated for injuries he sustained to his jaw, hip, left shoulder, and face. He was released from the hospital at 11:00 Sunday night.

Police are asking for any witnesses to call AID at (215) 685-3180 or 911. They need a description of the vehicle that was carrying the ladder.
