Police investigate 2 possible luring attempts in South Jersey

EVESHAM TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- Police here in South Jersey are investigating two attempted luring incidents this month - one in Evesham Township and the other in Oaklyn.

In both cases a man asked the children if they wanted candy.

In video surveillance you can see two boys, ages 10 and 11, walking along the street in the area of Peter Hurd Way in the Sanctuary development in Evesham Township just before 5 p.m. on January 16th. A black sedan drove by with an older white male with gray hair driving and a teenage girl with long blond hair also in the car.

Lt. Joseph Friel of Evesham Township Police explains, "The vehicle stopped when they were playing in the front yard, and the driver asked if they wanted candy."

The boys knew something didn't seem right.

Lt. Friel tells us, "One of the young boys then went into his pocket and pulled his cell phone out and stated to the driver that he was calling the police and put the phone up to his ear."

The black sedan drove away.

Later, Evesham Township Police became aware of a very similar case in Oaklyn a little earlier on the same day.

A black sedan carrying a man and a woman drove up to three kids in the unit block of Manor Avenue and the male driver offered candy. The kids refused and the sedan drove away.

Police are asking parents to talk to their kids and take precautions.

In the Evesham Township neighborhood they are doing just that.

Evesham resident Rebecca Thompson says, "There's so many kids around here and we love that they can go out and have a good time and run around together, but we just have to remind them about stranger danger - keep your eyes open especially for your friends too."

The one difference in the cases is that the people in the car in the Oaklyn case are both described as being 60-70 years old. In the case in Evesham Township the female was a teenager.
