Police are investigating a shooting that left a man injured in Philadelphia's Juniata section early Saturday morning.

JUNIATA (WPVI) -- Police say a 23-year-old man accidentally shot and injured himself in Philadelphia's Juniata section early Saturday morning.

Officers responded just before 2:30 a.m. to an alley in the rear of a home on the 4200 block of Castor Avenue after several reports of gunshots fired.

They discovered blood and shell casings behind the home.

Investigators went to Einstein Medical Center to talk to a man who showed up with a gunshot wound to the hand.

He told police he was handling his 22 Caliber, Mossberg Rifle preparing the gun for a sale when he accidentally discharged the rifle inside his basement.

He then transported himself along with his mother in his vehicle to the hospital.

He sustained a single gunshot wound to his left hand and was treated and released.
