Police: Man fired gun in home, nearly shot neighbor

WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A West Philadelphia man is facing charges after he allegedly fired a gun in his home, nearly striking his upstairs neighbor.

Melvin Williams, 58, is being charged with aggravated assault and related offenses.

The incident happened on Thursday night in the 6200 block of Chestnut Street.

Police say the bullet went through his ceiling and into the apartment above but, fortunately, did not hit the tenant there.

Investigators say they do not yet know the circumstances of the gunfire.

Police say when they took Williams into custody they recovered a weapon.
