Police: South Philadelphia teacher stabbing a possible suicide

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police say they are investigating the fatal stabbing of a school teacher in South Philadelphia as a possible suicide.

The incident happened just before 8:00 a.m. Thursday at the Holiday Inn Express near 10th Street and Packer Avenue.

Police say the 48-year-old woman went into the hotel's restroom. About 10 minutes later, she was found stabbed several times in the neck, arms and chest.

She was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where she died at 3:45 p.m.

Her identity has not been released, pending family notification.

The victim worked as a 6th grade teacher at Key Elementary School in South Philadelphia.

Police are working with School District of Philadelphia officials to have grief counselors on hand for students and faculty.

Authorities say they recovered a steak knife and a pair of scissors at the scene.

At this time the incident is being handled as a possible suicide but it remains under investigation.
