WILMINGTON (WPVI) -- Police are searching for answers after a man was struck and killed in a hit-and-run in Wilmington.

At 10:16 p.m. Saturday, police responded to the intersection of Jackson and Maryland avenues for a person down in the roadway.

At first, they thought he had been assaulted, but they would later learn he was the victim of a hit-and-run accident:

"For them to hit the guy and just keep on going, not stop, or call the ambulance, I think that's wrong," Don Lewis of Wilmington said.

The victim suffered severe head trauma and was rushed to Christiana Hospital where he later died.

Police were not able to find any debris that would indicate the color of type of vehicle that struck him.

So far no witnesses have surfaced.

Police have not yet released the victim's name because they are having trouble finding family members.

Anyone who has information on this incident is asked to call Sergeant James Karschner of the Special Operation Division Traffic Unit at 302-571-4414.
