Search intensifies for killer in shooting of 8-year-old Camden girl
CAMDEN, N.J. (WPVI) -- Police haven't given up - not even close - in their search for the killer in the shooting of an 8-year-old girl in Camden, New Jersey.
Foot patrols and a command post has been in place 24-7. Police Chief Scott Thomson says their "all hands on deck" approach doesn't stop until the suspect who shot little Gabrielle Carter is found.
"We have leads that we're working on. Just this afternoon I was meeting with the FBI. We've brought in their help and assistance on this," said Thomson.
But as the memorial for Gabby has grown at her home, so has the department's need for information.
"People out here know what happened. We have a moral obligation to protect children. Not just our own, but everyone in the community," said Thomson.
Chief Thomson says the reality is someone in Camden needs to step up now, and needs to stop harboring a child murderer.
"This is somebody's cousin, somebody's nephew, somebody's kid that's involved in this, and the streets know and we know because the streets are telling us," said Thomson.
We spoke with Vaugh and Danielle Gureghian, who own the school Gabby attended. They've contributed much of the $76,000 reward for the suspects capture and paid for her funeral.
"We need to catch the killer of this little girl. We need to keep her story alive until the killer is caught. We need people to step up and be responsible and do the right thing," said Danielle Gureghian, Camden Community Charter School.
"Just 8 years old, just to snuff out the life of somebody that young under a scenario like this is terrible," said Vahan Gureghian, Camden Community Charter School.
Gabby's funeral is on Saturday.
Camden County Police are now working with the FBI to catch the killer, but Chief Thomson says a better partner for this investigation would be a witness or that someone who knows who did this.
"Everybody is in danger in this community as long as these individuals are running around," said Thomson.
