Hundreds of thousands of dead fish have washed up in a North Jersey creek.

KEANSBURG, N.J. (WPVI) -- Hundreds of thousands of dead fish have washed up in a North Jersey creek.

Neighbors around the Waackaack Creek in Keansburg, Monmouth County say the smell of dead, rotting fish has been awful.

Environmental officials believe the peanut bunker fish were likely chased into the creek by predator fish.

And that the creek got stagnant, causing the fish to die of decreased oxygen levels.

This tends to happen during hot summers.
