Relief and recovery underway in Delaware Co. after Tuesday's storms

BROOKHAVEN, Pa. (WPVI) -- Relief and recovery efforts continue in Delaware County, two days after Tuesday's destructive storms.

Action News was outside one house in Brookhaven that was barely visible under a huge oak tree on Wednesday.

Thursday morning, the tree was mostly gone, and the damage had a temporary patch.

But there's still a lot of recovery work left to do in the area. Many neighborhoods still don't have power.

Many people have been forced from their homes and have found shelter with friends and family.

A number of shelters have been opened in the county. Academy Park High School is open in the eastern part of the county.

On Thursday morning they opened up PPL Park in Chester for people who need to cool off, get a shower and food and water.

Brookhaven Borough Hall remains open as a shelter and a place to get water and ice and charge electronics.

Delaware County remains under a disaster declaration.

That enables the county to get state and federal aid and streamlines the procurement process to get whatever supplies are needed.

The power is coming back on block by block.

Action News was in one of the blocks along Trimble Boulevard which is back on line.

But it didn't do much good for homeowner John Wilwert, because his home has been condemned.

"I can't go in there," he told Action News. "But at least my refrigerator and my freezer are still running. Give me time to get the food out and get it to somewhere else where I can store it."

The county is bringing in a supply of dry ice for others who are trying to save their food.

A lot of work left to be done here and all over the county.

But as Wilwert said, help is coming in from all over.
