NORTHAMPTON, Pa. (WPVI) -- A man's hand was severed after he tried to rob the residents of a home in Northampton County.

The incident happened late Saturday night in the 1300 block of Canal Street in Northampton Borough.

According to police, two men entered the home shortly before midnight, intending to rob the residents inside.

One of those residents heard the noise and grabbed a sharp object to defend himself. That's when, investigators say, he slashed one of the intruders, severing the suspect's hand.

Both would-be robbers took off, and the injured ended up at a local hospital.

There was no immediate word on his condition.

The residents in the home were not injured, but posted a sign showing two hands on the door with a "Beware!" sign.
