Tacony neighborhood lights up for good cause

TACONY (WPVI) -- A steady stream of enamored faces filed down a glittering Greeby Street Wednesday night in the Tacony section of Philadelphia.

We ask Bill Norris of Jenkintown what he thought of the lights.

"Oh my God it's great! We brought our dog with us, too," said Norris.

"Every night we have a line of people coming through, walking, taking pictures," said Mark Stabler of Tacony.

It's the Tacony neighborhood's 19th year putting on the festive light show that's uniting their block with the Salvation Army for a good cause.

"Everybody who drives through the neighborhood, checking out the lights and the display, will bring a toy, they'll put money in the kettle to support our programs throughout the year, and the toys go to the kids that need toys for Christmas," said Major Tim Lavenbein, Salvation Army.

The nonprofit typically receives about 200 new donated toys during the annual three-hour event, and raises money as well.

But the lights remain the big attraction.

"It's been happening so long, I think now people want to come and see how it expands. Year after year, it gets bigger and bigger," said Lavenbein.

The neighborhood has the lights up throughout the holiday season, and if your wondering if their electric bill is sky high during this month, we're told the majority of the lights are LED.
