Tragedy averted thanks to the heroic actions of a teenager.

NEWARK, Del. (WPVI) -- An armed gunman forced his way into a Newark, Delaware home earlier this week. With just seconds to think, a teen thought of his mom and tonight is being credited for saving her life.

Audio from the 911 call was released Thursday, in which you can hear a frantic Patricia Buckworth say to the operator, "Somebody's trying to break into my apartment."

Moments later shots were fired. Scary moments for Buckworth and her 19-year-old son Rodrick.

Police say Buckworth's neighbor, 41-year-old Jason Brunson, forced his way into their house and kept firing shots.

Patricia Buckworth tells Action News, "My son ran down the hallway, came into my bedroom, closed my bedroom door and put the dresser in front of the door."

Action News spoke with Patricia from Christiana Hospital earlier today. She says her son thought to protect her first.

"He is very, very remarkable. He is amazing," she said.

Brunson eventually made his way into the room. Shooting Rodrick again and hitting Patricia in the upper body.

Patricia says, "He was standing over me and shot himself and landed on top of me."

Patricia says she didn't even know Brunson. Her first interaction with the neighbor was last Friday. He told her he was a veteran.

"He just said I was being loud and he thought I was talking about him," she explained.

Tonight family and friends still don't understand how this happened, but they aren't surprised by how Rodrick responded.

Friend Frank Hawkins tells us, "That speaks not just to his character, but I think it also speaks to the love and the relationship he has with his mom."

Patricia says, "He told me, 'We came into this world singles, but now we are a pair.'"

Tonight Rodrick is still at Christiana Hospital. His mom tells us he is expected to make a full recovery.
