The aftermath of Hermine in Atlantic City
ATLANTIC CIY (WPVI) -- Lifeguards were only letting people go knee deep into the ocean Monday because of the strong currents and rough waves.
But that wasn;t not stopping some people from making the most of what was left of the Labor Day weekend.
Surfers in Atlantic City used the rough waves to their advantage on the cloudy Labor Day.
Kyle Crego of Ocean City, New Jersey said, "Been eyeing it up for like a week now. So every time there's a hurricane down in the Caribbean everyone's keeping their eye on it, see what path it takes and whatnot."
Lifeguards were patrolling the beach to make sure everyone stayed safe.
The Witkowski family from Flemington, New Jersey said they haven't gotten any time in the ocean this weekend with their two young boys. Still - they're glad they stayed.
Shannon Witkowski said, "I expected it to be really crazy and it's dead almost down here. We hit no traffic coming down. It was nice. It was actually nice to be a little quiet."
A little too quiet if you ask shop owners on the boardwalk.
Businesses like the Jersey Devil Surf Shop were definitely feeling Hermine's effects, even while she's out to sea.
It's been a much quieter weekend than employees anticipated.
Andrew DiPasquale from the Jersey Devil Surf Shop said, "Business is going to be slower just because of the tropical storm that was coming up the coast but better safe than sorry. After Sandy and everything. Take every precaution necessary. But there's nothing you can do about the weather."
DiPasquale said they're looking forward to the warm-up ahead, and they're hoping to make up for some of the lost business with a few nice September weekends.
