Thieves steal $300,000 worth of valuables from Moorestown homes

MOORESTOWN, N.J. -- Police are looking for the thieves who have stolen more than $300,000 in valuables from homes in Moorestown, New Jersey.

RJ Meagher and his family came home from a night at the shore Sunday and found the master bedroom ransacked.

The thief or thieves stole a safe containing $200,000 worth of jewelry.

"Great sense of violation; my wife and kids are very unsettled," Meagher said.

Moorestown police say the burglary is one of nearly a half dozen in the past two months.

Neighbors tell Action News they are feeling a little less secure.

"Absolutely crazy, it's a dead end. I wouldn't think anyone would come down here to rob someone. Everyone is very close; it's a close knit community. They moved in a year ago, we moved in a year ago," Steve Heffernen said.

Last week, on the 900 block of Borton Landing Road, the bandits stole $60,000 worth of jewelry from a home.

The break-ins have police conducting extra patrols.

"The main thing that is tying them together is they are in the same general vicinity," Moorestown Police Lt. Lee Lieber said.

Police say the thieves have been breaking locked doors and windows to gain entry.

Meagher says the bandits left many high priced computer items and electronics.

He has a security system for his home, but it was set for repairs Monday, a day late in the world of crime.

"I'm bitter. I'm upset with myself also, not making sure the alarm system was fully active," Meagher said.

Police suggest neighbors to hide valuables in other areas of their house than the master bedroom or put them in a safety deposit box at the bank.
