STRONGSVILLE, OHIO (WPVI) -- A police department in Ohio is under fire after officers put a 3-year-old girl in a holding cell.

The toddler was with her mother when the mother was arrested on shoplifting charges at a Walmart store in Strongsville.

Police say they caught Latonya Bass with $500 worth of items in the girl's stroller.

Mother and daughter were put in a jail cell for 30 minutes, until the child's father arrived to get her.

Officers maintain they did the right thing, by allowing the little girl to stay with her mom while she was in custody.
