WYNNEFIELD HEIGHTS (WPVI) -- A Pennsylvania State Trooper is recovering after he was allegedly punched by a driver that had just led police on a chase through Philadelphia.

The male suspect is now in custody, but police are trying to track down his passenger who fled from the scene.

A Trooper was on the Schuylkill Express just west of Girard Avenue when he witnessed a driver committing a traffic violation Monday night.

The Trooper tried to pull over the car when the driver sped off and took the Girard exit with police in pursuit.

The driver then proceeded to crash the vehicle at 34th and Mantua.

The passenger jumped out, fled on foot, and got away. The driver tried to do the same, but a Trooper caught up with him.

That is when the Trooper was allegedly punched in the face.

The Trooper deployed his Taser striking the suspect.

The driver was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Trooper was also taken to a hospital.

The name of the suspect has not been released.

The search for the second suspect continues.
