NEWARK, Del. (WPVI) -- Action News has uncovered what caused the stream to turn green in Phillips Park in Newark.

The University of Delaware told us on Tuesday afternoon that a pipe cracked in the air handling unit at Purnell Hall.

Nearly 500 gallons of water with green dye spilled into the stream, which leads to the Silverbrook and eventually the Christina River.

Officials say the dye is used to track leaks and is not harmful.

The pipe has since been repaired.
