The courts in Argentina have granted Sandra the orangutan legal rights as a non-human person.

The courts in Argentina have granted Sandra the orangutan legal rights as a non-human person.

Her lawyers say she was illegally detained in the Buenos Aires Zoo.

They successfully fought to have her moved to a sanctuary in Brazil.

The courts agreed with animal rights activists who said she was unlawfully deprived of freedom.

Sandra is a 29-year-old Sumatran orangutan and she's been living in the Buenos Aires Zoo for the last two decades.

The zoo has 100 days to appeal.

This landmark ruling could pave the way for more lawsuits on behalf of other orangutans who are high functioning like Sandra.
