After a beloved police dog was killed in the line of duty, people and canines gathered to pay their respects to the fallen hero in a touching ceremony.

On March 31, a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police dog named Nicky died in the line of duty when he was shot while trying to apprehend a murder suspect. Two other people were also killed in the incident.

"Officers were dispatched to the 9800 block of Fast Elk in response to a 911 call. Before the officers could arrive, two citizens concerned for their neighbor's safety had already responded to offer their assistance. Brandon Hughes and Felecia Wimberly-Hughes lost their lives trying to help a neighbor in need," the police department said in a press release.

Friends and family paid respect to Nicky on April 6 in a touching memorial service, with many of Nicky's canine comrades barking in unison to pay respects to their fallen friend.

"Nicky was a loyal and dedicated partner who was always happiest being in the truck on patrol with his partner," said Sheriff Joe Lombardo. "Nicky's service and sacrifice undoubtedly saved officer's and citizen's lives."
