Shelter Me: Cape May County Animal Shelter

CAPE MAY COUNTY, N.J. (WPVI) -- The Cape May County Animal Shelter rescued more than 1300 animals last year.

Long term residents have a home at the Cape May County Animal Shelter.

Judy Davies-Dunhour is the Manager at the shelter.

She said, "You just keep telling yourself the right situation will come along."

Hope and Chase lived at the shelter for nearly two years. Hope was rescued first.

Bob Bitting and Rob Harris adopted Hope and Chase.

"He walked past and Hope came right up to him," said Bob.

"And that's when I said she's the one," said Rob.

About a year later Rob and Bob were looking for a companion for Hope.

"We found chase and he was in exactly the same cage as hope was," said Bob.

Now Chase and Hope have bonded in their forever home.

Bob said, "They got along right away."

"They love to play with each other. They run back and forth, and chase each other," added Rob.

Judy Davies-Dunhour said, "What we're doing is working, and that feels good."

The staff at Cape May County Animal Shelter works to prepare the dogs, and owners for the adoption process.

"It's about training, it's about education, it's about realizing that you have a living being that's relying on you," said Judy.

Ellie May is a 10-year-old beagle trying to find a forever family.

"She's just a little old lady that's looking for a home," said Judy.

Ellie May qualifies for their senior for senior program.

"Anybody over the age of 65 that adopts a dog or cat over the age of 8, we waive the adoption fee," said Judy.

Pooh is another senior. "A 10-year-old cat," said Judy.

He's lost his vision, but has a great personality.

Judy says, "This is Bram, and Bram is about 5 or 6-years-old."

Bram's been a resident of the shelter for eighteen months.

"He's friendly, nice, and he likes to have human contact," said Judy.

And finally, Penelope, she loves treats.

She's 9-years-old. She's a beagle/sheltie mix. Her family couldn't take care of her, so she got kind of bumped around a lot, and the poor thing was found wandering on the side of the road. She wants a good home. She's loving. She likes kids. She likes family, and she wants a place to call her own.
