SMITHVILLE, N.J. -- A rescue group in New Jersey is changing the way many people think about the pit bull.
Jim Tinnes is the founder of Sammi's Voice Pit Bull Rescue in Smithville, New Jersey.
He says, "There's a stereotype out there on pit bulls that they're such a dangerous breed."
Sammi's Voice is trying to change the perception about pit bulls. Their mission is to not only rescue, but educate the public about the misunderstood breed.
"They are actually a lovable, affectionate, willing to please dog," says Tinnes.
Missy represents what the rescue is capable of. She was rescued and adopted from a local shelter, but her mother, Sammi, was left behind.
Tinnes says, "There's a lot of pit bulls out there that need help."
All the pit bulls are rescued from the New Jersey area.
Sammi's Voice hopes to share Sammi's story, but not her fate. Local companies like the Old World Bakery help share their message with the community.
"One of the biggest challenges I've found is to find fosters especially for a pit bull," said Tinnes.
They are working with the Burlington County Animal Shelter to find a foster parent or forever family for a dog named Springer.
Jen Furman of Burlington County Animal Shelter says Springer's is over 2-years-old.
He was neglected and abused, but has regained his health. And, now he needs a place to call home.
"He's pretty good with other dogs. We've been working on his social manners," says Furman.
Grayson is around 3-years-old. The dog was found as a stray and severely emaciated.
Furman says, "He's rehabbing into a beautiful healthy dog."
He came in with cropped ears, but has a big heart to share with a new family.
"He's a very sweet boy, very friendly with people, very loving and easy going," added Furman.
Xena is a 1-year-old and she's a pocket pit, smaller in stature, but big on personality.
Volunteer Shannon Perry says, "She's a really playful loving dog."
And finally, there is Sadie. She's about a year-old. Sadie was a stray brought in just before Christmas and she's still looking for the gift of a forever home. She'll play. She'll be a couch potato. She's just looking for a new family to please.
