PENNSVILLE, N.J. (WPVI) -- Authorities say some kind of confrontation in Pennsville, Salem County ended with one man dead and another behind bars.

Police announced the arrest of 31-year-old Dante Spence on Tuesday morning.

Officers were called to the Penn Terrace Apartments off Meadow Road around 10 p.m. Monday.

According to investigators, Spence was in a confrontation with the victim, identified as 45-year-old Gary Carter.

Carter was stabbed and hit over the head, causing blunt force trauma, police said.

Chief of Police Allen Cummings says when they arrived Spence wasn't hard to find.

"Right at the apartment complex. He was walking around the complex when we got down there," Cummings said.

He also said Spence was also somewhat cooperative.

"He basically talked us about what had occurred. He was advised of his rights and made some statements and was brought back here and processed and things are moving forward now," Cummings said.

When asked about the incident by Action News, Spence only said, "That's none of your business, bro."

Spence's neighbor, Anne Tippens, said she heard loud noises coming from his apartment.

"It sounded like someone was smacking weights or something like that," she said. "I said 'What are you doing?' He said, 'I'm having an episode,'" Tippens said.

She didn't think anything was wrong until police showed up later.

"They said someone had been murdered and they took Dante," Tippens said.

Spence faces a number of charges, including murder.
