A concerted effort is underway to drum up support for Philadelphia's bid to host the Democratic National Convention in 2016.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A concerted effort is underway to drum up support for Philadelphia's bid to host the Democratic National Convention in 2016.

Mayor Michael Nutter, former Governor Ed Rendell and Congressman Bob Brady were among the political heavyweights touting the City of Brotherly Love.

A rally-like event was held in a beer garden on Independence Mall on Thursday.

Members of the DNC Site Committee will be in Philadelphia next week to discuss the city's effort to host the convention in 2016.

Government leaders spoke of Philadelphia's past success in hosting major conventions and all the historic attractions the city has to offer.

"They are going to see one of the most incredible cities in the USA, one of the most incredible facilities in the USA, they're going to see sights you can't see anywhere else but in Philadelphia," said Mayor Michael Nutter.

Philadelphia is one of five cities bidding for the event.

DNC officials also are considering Birmingham, Alabama, Columbus, Ohio, New York City and Phoenix.
