TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- 6abc will be hosting the New Jersey Gubernatorial Debate between Republican Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno and Democrat Phil Murphy.

Jim Gardner will be among the moderators for the event, being held tonight at 7 p.m.

You will be able to watch it live on 6abc.com.

On the eve of the debate, Action News caught up with both candidates.

Guadagno is New Jersey's first lieutenant governor. A former county sheriff and federal prosecutor, she's also served as secretary of state during the two Christie administrations.

The centerpiece of her campaign is a promise to cut $1.5 billion in property taxes annually by giving homeowners a credit of up to $3,000 if they're paying more than 5% of their income toward school taxes.

"My plan addresses those who need the most help now. Senior citizens shouldn't have to pay more than 5 percent of their household income. That guarantees they can stay in the state where they raised their families," Guadagno said.

Murphy is an ex Goldman Sachs investment banker who was finance chair for the Democratic National Committee and served as ambassador to Germany during the Obama administration.

His plan is to raise $1.3 billion in taxes from the state's wealthiest residents while closing corporate loopholes and taxing marijuana, assuming it becomes legal.

"We are going to reinvest in public education, in infrastructure, in a fairness agenda such at the end of the day you'll get property tax relief. But more important, the investment will come to you and the middle class," Murphy said.

Guadagno has tried to distance herself from Governor Christie, sometimes openly disagreeing with her unpopular boss.

"I'm running on my values, my principals and most importantly my record," she said. "My record for the last eight years has been to work on jobs."

Murphy says Guadagno can't hide from the last eight years.

"I think she's got to run on the record of the Christie-Guadagno years. They defunded Planned Parenthood, they've deny climate change, they'll veto gun safety laws.

Election day is November 7.
