CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- Philadelphia officials broke ground this morning on a new development project in Center City.

The development on North Broad Street will feature two new six-story apartment buildings across the street from one another.

There will also be 1700 feet of ground-floor retail and more than 300 public parking spaces.

The project will replace two existing parking lots at Broad and Callowhill streets.

"When you look at all the coordination and combination of people involved in this, this is going to be a first-class project, and a terrific project for North Broad," said Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney.

The Hanover Company and Parkway Corporation are behind the project.

No timeline was given for its completion.
