Budget friendly tips to organize and declutter your closet

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. Sound familiar?

The rule is, if we don't see it - we don't wear it.

We got some clever, budget happy hacks from an organizing expert to minimize our clutter and maximize our closet's potential.

"If you have a house where you hold onto it for an emotional keep and you can't let go of it, our possessions start possessing us," said organizing expert, Rose Miller.

And when it comes to decluttering and living a streamlined, organized life - Rose Knows Where It Goes.

"If there's a place for it, you are not going to shove it - you are going to find it and wear it," she said.

For example, use coat hooks to cleverly display statement necklaces.

Rose says we only wear about 20 percent of what we have, either because it's out of sight and mind or because we're living in what she calls a house of regret.

"You can't have a closet where I may fit into that some day or I remember how much I spent. Consign it or donate it feels good to let it go," she said.

When she revamped a South Philadelphia room for her client, Dana Friedman, she started by showing off the beautiful things like earrings and handbags, some of which she displayed on a lid organizer for pots and pans.

The others get tucked away fashionably in a storage ottoman.

"All of Dana's bags are stored in a place where she can now sit - its a beautiful , functional piece," said Rose.

Rose also says you should utilize your vertical space, get behind the door storage and use an over the door organizer for things like hats, gloves and baseball caps.

Also, turn an old bookcase into a shoe display.

"Rotating your shoe heel to toe fits more on the shelf," she said.

And she offers a budget hack for your tall boots. Use pipe insulation to keep boots upright, which is about 99 cents a foot at a hardware store.

For flip flops, store them in a magazine holder.

And Rose told us one last decluttering tip as we enter the new fall season.

At the start of each season, turn all of the hangers backwards. When you wear something, turn it forward.

By next season, as you switch around your wardrobe, get rid of the unworn items on those backwards facing hangers.
