While identity theft is a big issue for those shopping online, conventional theft is a concern as well for those shopping in local malls throughout the area.

But there are some measures at your disposal to make sure your shopping experience is a safe and pleasant one.

Jerry Hunt, who is visiting the Delaware Valley from Dublin, Ireland, says after traveling and shopping around the world he has learned his lesson about leaving his bags unattended.

"I've had quite a few experiences with bags going missing because I was not watching them closely enough," he said.

And so, with the Christmas shopping season in full swing, malls across the region have increased their security measures to keep would-be Grinches at bay.

At the King of Prussia Mall, that includes offering customers rides to their parked cars.

"If a customer needs a courtesy escort, if they're loaded down or they just feel that they don't want to walk a long distance to their call, all they have to do is stop by guest services and ask for an escort and we'll take care of it," said Kathy Smith, Marketing Director for the King of Prussia Mall.

Meanwhile, if you're bogged down with bags, but you're not done shopping yet, the mall also offers an alternative to leaving those bags unattended inside your car.

"Coat and bag check is available at our guest services center. It's complimentary - check your bags and we'll watch them for you," said Smith.

Smith also says if you do decide to leave purchased items in your car, use some common sense and put them in the trunk where potential thieves can't see them.

That goes with other simple suggestions like keeping your bags with you when you're in line at the food court and keeping your wallet in your front pocket - just in case.

Action News spoke with shoppers who say being vigilant gives you peace of mind - it's just unfortunate that you have to be vigilant.

"I wish it was a safer community around the holidays, people were more thankful for what they ave and not taking from other people," said shopper, Kamila Levine from Wayne, Pa.

At King of Prussia, shuttle service to the parking lot is only available on weekends and holidays. But if you want a security officer to walk you to your car, that service is available every day, year-round.
