Secret shoppers were sent to check supermarket prices, and the information they came back with is gold!

Consumer Reports' ShopSmart sent secret shoppers to check supermarket prices, and the information they came back with is gold!

First: You can save as much as 36 percent if you buy already bagged produce and multipacks of grocery items like cat food, soap, and yogurt.

The best package deals: a 36 percent savings on russet potatoes and an 18 percent discount on Chobani Greek yogurt.

Another tip: Hit the deli! The secret shoppers checked brands like Alpine Lace and Boar's Head - and found that the deli case was often a better deal, saving as much as 30 percent on cheese and 18 percent on ham!

Number three: Online subscription services are another way to save. You can get as much as 20 percent off if you use Amazon Subscribe and Save.

And now Target.com has a similar subscription service. You can get items delivered on a schedule of your choosing. Pus, save 5-percent on each order and get free shipping.

That's pretty significant considering in almost every price scan, Target and Walmart proved to be the low-price leaders, offering 70 percent savings on many items.

Club memberships like Costco netted savings, too - As much as 63-percent!

If you're online anyway, check out Boxed. If offers warehouse prices and sizes without membership fees or long lines - plus free two-day shipping!

Checkout 51 is best for cash back. If you buy items from the featured offers of the week like Campbell's Soup and cough drops, you get cash back every time you hit $20 in rewards.
