Saving with 6abc: Save on summer entertaining

Whether you are planning a July 4th barbecue or other summer entertaining, the folks at Kiplinger.com have hot tips to save at the supermarket without coupons!

First, take advantage of holiday sales as we head into the weekend. Right now there are big sales on condiments, hot dogs, chicken, chips, soda, beer and paper goods. Some of these items are good to stock up on!

Second, check unit pricing. Look closely, because this price shows how much you're paying per ounce. Do the math - you may find that, sometimes, you can save more buying a few small packages than one large one.

Thirds, skip convenience items. Do all of the washing, chopping and preparing yourself and save big on your bill.

Fourth, find alternatives to expensive items. Choose different cuts of meat, less pricy salad ingredients - maybe skip the olives - and don't do fancy desserts. The savings will add up!

Finally, look up - or down! Stores often place expensive items at eye level. Look up or down for sales.
