PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Believe it or not, there are just a few weeks left before many students head back to school.

And Action News is rounding up some of the best back to school items to buy in August.

DealNews.com says typically there are twice as many deals in August than in September for kids' shoes.

This is also a good time to buy a laptop.. Laptop prices typically drop an extra 8 percent to 25 percent off in August.

DealNews also says Target has typically offered the best deals on school supplies like paper, notebooks, pens and pencils. Walmart was a close second.

And they say Amazon won't have the best prices unless you're buying in bulk, which isn't a bad idea if you have a big family or if you want to do a pool with other families.

And speaking of Amazon, be sure to shop around for the best price - even when you're online.

Wikibuy is a free online comparison tool and its study showed that Amazon's school supply prices were an average of 15-percent higher than other retailers..

Parents of ninth graders could have saved nearly $50 dollars on average by buying from other retailers.

And Wikibuy says if every American family with a 5th grader bought their back-to-school supplies on Amazon, they'd potentially overpay by $119 million dollars this year alone.

Wikibuy also found that early bird shoppers overpay the most on Amazon and that prices for back-to-school items were highest in the morning.

But Amazon has released the following statement to Action News:

"The Wikibuy research is flawed and misleading. All our customers are offered the same great low price on our back to school products. Our customers expect to come to Amazon and find the lowest prices and we work hard to meet or beat them, across our entire retail selection. We obsess over the things we believe customers will always care about - low prices, vast selection, and fast delivery - and work hard to provide all three, all the time."
