What's the Deal: Make money from kid clutter

PHILADELPHIA -- Any parent out there knows kids are expensive, and a lot of their stuff - from clothes, to shoes, to toys - have a short shelf life.

If you're decluttering ahead of the new holiday gifts coming, or looking to start fresh for the new year, there are some ways you can cash in on the things they're outgrown.

There's a website called Swap.com where you send your stuff and they make an offer. You can then accept it, have the items returned for a fee or have them donated.

Next, let your kids do the work. The app KidsTrade allows your kids to trade their items with their friends.

There's another app called BrickSwap where you can do this with LEGOs.

And did you know that Amazon allows you to return books and games you've purchased for your kids for a trade-in value and they will send you a gift card? Walmart does the same for video games.

When it comes to saving for the future, a mom intended to make things easier with an app she invented called Kidfund.

Laura Bailyn says she wanted to make it all more user friendly. The app allows you to transfer money to an account for your kids either sporadically or with reoccurring payments or set up a cash gift registry for birthdays or holidays for free.

She says the account is fully insured up to $250,000 and there is interest on certain amounts.
