The community and a local bank have come to the aid of the Mummers' last remaining fancy club.
Golden Sunrise was facing its final parade this New Year's, until the unexpected support promised to keep them strutting at least one more year.
John Lucus has been a mummer for 67 years. He's been with the Golden Sunrise Fancy Club for 43 of them, and can tell you about every costume in the club's warehouse.
The thought that this year's Mummers Parade might be their last was unthinkable for John, club president Jack Cohen, and other club members.
Initially, help came from an unlikely source.
Jeri Shelton joined Golden Sunrise shortly after she moved to Philadelphia from San Francisco.
Shelton says, "When I moved here I saw mummers outside my window the first New Year's Day. These big fancy suits and I thought it was really great, the festivity of it."
When the club's finances dwindled, Jeri went to the crowdfunding site, Indiegogo. She's raised more than $1,400 so far.
The community has also made donations, and when Rhonda Costello, Executive Vice President of Republic Bank, heard of Golden Sunrise's plight...
"I mean, folk art, such a Philly tradition. How could you not help?" Costello said.
So Republic Bank donated $10,000.
Costello explains, "We love giving at the grass roots level. That's what we are. We're a community bank and we love supporting all of our communities where we are. This is very important to us."
John Lucus says, "That $10,000 check is gonna keep Golden Sunrise on the street for another year."
Yes, the club will live to strut at least through 2016.
