A new initiative is helping to transform blighted properties and providing jobs for former inmates

CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- A new initiative is helping to transform blighted properties in Philadelphia, while providing jobs for former inmates.

Terrell Bagby Interim Director of RISE sees this as a win for all concerned.

"Second chances are vital to the criminal justice system. And what we have here today is contractors giving individuals a second chance at becoming productive citizens."

City council, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and Philly RISE have teamed up for the Landcare Re-Entry Initiative..

It helps private contractors and community organizations transform blighted, vacant lots while hiring and training former prison inmates.

Supporters call it one of the most innovative anti-recidivism programs in the nation.

Employers met with prospective applicants Wednesday to fill a variety of positions.
