North Carolina woman holds contest to give away farm

BENNETT, N.C. (WPVI) -- A farmer in North Carolina is looking to give up the only life she knows, hang up her boots, and retire. But she's not doing that without paying it forward first.

Norma Burns has launched a contest to give away her slice of country paradise.

She's hoping to find the perfect pair of committed, aspiring farmers to take over her 13 acres of land near Raleigh.

The goal is to find a couple who otherwise couldn't afford good land.

The lucky new owner will also get her license for organic farming and be introduced to her buyers.

The contest requires a 200 word essay, a resume, and a $300 entry fee.

Norma's phone has been ringing off the hook.

"As soon as it went out it just kind of exploded. I've heard from people I haven't heard from in 20 years. Calling and saying, 'oh I wish I could have that farm.' Most of them are too old. So it's just been a real surprise. A pleasant surprise," Norma said.

She plans to pick the 20 best essays and let a panel of judges pick the winner.
