Phillies fans saw something new and different at Citizens Bank Park on Friday night - for the first time fans will be screened with metal detectors.

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Metal detectors are the newest addition to the lineup for Phillies games at Citizens Bank Park.

The additional layer of security is part of a new Major League Baseball mandate that calls for every fan to be screened.

"Instead of pat downs which we've done in the past, we will do a full metal detection on every fan who comes to the ballpark," said Salvatore DeAngelis, Phillies director of security.

The metal detectors have been installed at every entrance gate to the park, which seats over 43,000.

As part of the screening, fans will be asked to empty their pockets of cell phones, cameras and keys.

"It's just like being at the airport, just walk on through," said Connie Bauder.

It was the Boston Marathon bombings in part that prompted Major League Baseball to look for ways to make ballparks more secure.

"No issues - we prefer to be secure," said Scott Christy.

The metal detectors could lead to longer wait times to enter the stadium but fans we talked with seemed okay with that.

"I think it's okay. They may get a little backed up more than usual if there's more of a crowd," said Kurt Bauder.

"It's annoying but it's important. I think it's a great idea," said Pat Zaborowski.

Fans seem to be taking the changes in stride and the Phillies hope the added security won't take away from the ballpark experience.
