NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Two people were hit by a car while leaving a family party North Philadelphia, and the driver is now in custody.

It happened around 10 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of 6th Street and Erie Avenue.

According to investigators, the driver hit the victims, a boyfriend and girlfriend, and fled the scene.

A witness saw the striking vehicle, a 2002 Nissan Maxima, and followed it, police say.

The car was then recovered near the driver's home in the 2100 block of Fraley Street, about four miles away from the crash scene.

The vehicle had a shattered windshield and other significant damage.

The investigation continues into the circumstances of this crash, including whether the 29-year-old driver was under the influence.

He has not yet been charged.

The 44-year-old man who was hit was left unconscious and seriously injured. He is now hospitalized is in critical condition.

The 41-year-old woman who was hit is in stable condition.
