A motorist was being tested for DUI after the accident, which shut down southbound Academy Road for hours.

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A motorist struck and killed a pedestrian early Friday in Northeast Philadelphia.

It happened after 3:00 a.m. Friday in the southbound lanes of Academy Road near Morrell Avenue.

Images from the Action Cam live at the scene showed an SUV that appeared to have struck a utility pole.

The SUV had extensive front-end damage and had lost its left front wheel.

The wheel was seen lying in the road several yards behind the vehicle near the splintered pieces of a wooden utility pole.

Police tell Action News the pedestrian who was struck and killed was a man in 20s.

Investigators were testing the driver of the SUV for DUI.

The southbound lanes of Academy Road were shut down between Morrell Avenue and President Street as police investigated.

There was no immediate word when the road would reopen.
