A pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate-95 in Wilmington, Delaware early Wednesday morning.

WILMINGTON, Del. -- Authorities have identified the pedestrian that was struck and killed on Interstate 95 in Wilmington, Delaware early Wednesday.

It happened around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes near 6th Street approaching Martin Luther King Boulevard.

State police say 35-year-old John Manista of Delaware City was trying to cross the highway when he was hit by a 2005 Chevrolet Impala driven by 22-year-old Robin Hughes of Wilmington.

Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

His body was turned over to the state Division of Forensic Sciences. An autopsy was conducted to identify him.

Hughes stopped after the incident and was cooperating with investigators.

Police say neither he nor a 24-year-old male passenger were hurt.

The accident remains under investigation.

The right lane of southbound I-95 and the exit to Martin Luther King Boulevard were closed for about 3 hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
