ABINGTON TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- Forget a warning, starting Wednesday, running a red light in Abington Township, Montgomery County is going to cost you.

Drivers have had 60 days to get used to the devices. With that grace period over, police are now saying no more excuses.

In all, there are now three new red light cameras.

Since they were turned on, police have issued 694 warnings for running red lights.

But, anyone who does that beginning midnight Wednesday will get a $100 ticket.

Police Chief Bill Kelly says about 75 percent of the violators are from outside the township.

"With the red light cameras and by continuing this initiative and expanding this initiative in Abington Township, we are hoping to get everybody to drive like they are driving in their own neighborhood. Our statistics indicate that means they will be driving more safely," Kelly said.

Since the cameras went up, there have only been two crashes compared to seven for the same time period last year.

If you're from Abington or planning to travel through there, here are the locations of the cameras:

  • Route 611 and Old Welsh Road
  • Route 611 and Susquehanna Road
  • Route 63 and Fitzwatertown Road
  • Unlike most red light cameras, the ones in Abington Township aren't revenue makers.

The police chief says all the money from the tickets goes towards paying for the cameras.

These cameras will be enforced for an entire year.

At that point, police will reevaluate just how effective they've been.
