Route 1 reopens in New Castle Co. after truck with live chickens crashes

Police are investigating a vehicle crash involving two tractor-trailers in Smyrna, Delaware that sent a truckload of chickens across the road.

SMYRNA, Del. (WPVI) -- Police have reopened Route 1 in Smyrna, Delaware after a crash involving two tractor trailers, including one that was hauling live chickens.

The crash happened before 4 a.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes near exit 119.

Delaware State Police said in a statement that one of the trucks overturned in the crash.

Neither driver was injured, but the chicken trailer spilled its load of live chickens over a 1/4 mile stretch of the highway.

The southbound lanes were blocked for hours as crews cleared away the overturned trailer and the chickens.

All lanes were back open by 10:15 a.m.
