The last-minute travel rush for the Christmas holiday got underway Wednesday, and Mother Nature created some challenges.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- This is one of the busiest travel weeks of the year and Wednesday is considered the busiest day for travelers to get to holiday destinations.

Fog and weather in other parts of the country were affecting flights to and from Philadelphia. At some points, arrival delays were averaging over an hour.

Consequently, no matter which terminal you picked at PHL, at some point Wednesday morning you likely were waiting in a very long line.

"Madness, this is crazy," said Donovan Williams of Princeton, N.J.

"Annoying," said Eric Becker of Wyomissing.

Many travelers were hitting the skies but the majority were expected to drive over the holidays, since gas prices are low, and since both Christmas and New Year's Day this year create three-day weekends.

"AAA is projecting record numbers in terms of holiday travel, with over 100 million Americans planning to travel," said Jana Tidwell of AAA Mid-Atlantic.

If you're heading to the airport and flying American Airlines, make sure you double check which terminal your flight is leaving from.

The airline now has a bigger presence at PHL, thanks to its merger with US Airways.

There are a number of apps out there that you can choose for your smart devices, but it is recommended to visit the Philadelphia International Airport website to check travel conditions.
