After dropping to $2.23 in February, the average gallon in the 5 county area on the Pennsylvania side has jumped 40 cents.

Why?

Crude prices are up because of concerns about instability in the Middle East.

Additionally, gas prices always spike this time of year when cleaner burning summer blend fuel is mandated.

"Which is more expensive than what we use in winter months because it prevents high emissions and depletion of the ozone layer," Jana Tidwell of AAA Mid-Atlantic said.

Despite the current run up, gasoline is still a dollar cheaper than year ago.

It's estimated drivers are saving $400 to $800 a year because of that.

Experts think prices will continue to trend up on the short term and then level off.
