Philadelphia enacts Code Blue due to frigid temperatures

CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- People across the region are bundling up to try to beat these chilly temperatures. And while some are buying hand warmers and hats, others, like the homeless, are at serious risk.

The city is currently operating in Code Blue, which they enact any time there are extremely cold temperatures outside, like today. The goal is to get the homeless off the street and into warm shelters.

No matter who you are, over the next several days the goal will be to stay warm.

Mike Yaede with Global Services Heating and Cooling says when it gets cold, business heats up.

With temperatures in the 20s and a wind chill in the teens, people are using their heaters around the clock, which can cause problems and could leave you in the cold.

Regular maintenance is the key to keeping you warm.

Yaede explains, "The number one mistake is people do not change their filters, and do not get the regular maintenance. Every system is required by the manufacturer to get maintenance twice a year."

If you're headed out, the order of the day is to bundle up the best you can, even if it's a unique crocheted homemade hat - anything to stay warm.

Even with the sun, the cold rules supreme. Everyone deals with it differently. Some have to make sure their feet and hands are warm, while others say their face gets cold first.

But no matter who you talk to, all agree that with temperatures so cold, it's a constant battle to stay warm.

Many say they are ready for season to change.
