Gov. Christie declares state of emergency for New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J. (WPVI) -- Governor Chris Christie has declared a state of emergency for New Jersey as a winter storm hits the area.

Christie made the declaration saying the storm is "expected to impede transportation and travel throughout New Jersey."

The declaration gives the state's director of emergency management the authority to coordinate preparation and response efforts.

Christie said the declaration was made "as a precaution."

He went on to say there are no travel restrictions, but was urging travelers to be safe this Thanksgiving holiday.

So far, the snow storm has not had a large impact on South Jersey, but parts of North Jersey could be hit by heavy snow.
