PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- In bitterly cold weather, the goal is to dress to keep warm - armed with our thermal imaging camera, we put several people to the test.

At the Rothman Institute Ice Rink at City Hall's Dilworth Park, I snapped images to show people just how well they are staying warm.

The bright orange areas show where there is heat but it's escaping quickly, while the blue areas show where heat is being trapped in.

So how do people think they did?

"Definitely I thought I would be warmer than this," said Leah Samuelian.

Amy Neckelmann was also surprised at how much heat she was losing.

"Oh my goodness. I look pretty cold," said Neckelmann, with a laugh.

The thermal imaging was a first for her.

"It's very cool, I've never seen something like this. Very different

With freezing temperatures and whipping winds, doctors say it only takes minutes to experience frostbite.

"It's generally on the hands, tips of nose, ears, if those surfaces are exposed they're going to see frostbite first," said Dr. Robert Czincila, Einstein Medical Center Montgomery.

Mark Hoye showed me all of his layers and according to the thermal camera, he was doing a pretty decent job of staying warm.

"I give myself a seven. I could've done something with the ears," said Hoye.

For those waiting in the cold air to catch the city bus, dressing warm is key.

We put Alexis Patterson to the heat test. She had more heat staying in than leaving and that's important

"This is cool, it's really cool, it shows people where they can improve on," said Patterson.
