WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. (WPVI) -- As snow gave way to freezing rain on Sunday afternoon, a layer of ice started causing problems on roads, highways and the Philadelphia International Airport.

Crews played defense, working fast to treat and re-treat hundreds of miles of road.

"We are headed up to New York, we'll see what the Turnpike is like," said Amanda Cobert of New York.

The biggest challenge has been keeping the salt down. In some places, rain is washing it away.

Across the area, numerous spinouts and accidents had occurred.

Speed limits were reduced on many major highways, including the Schuylkill Expressway, the Blue Route, the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike.

In Pennsylvania, the manpower was visible as PennDOT treated and retreated mile after mile of slippery roadway. More than 330 trucks were on the job in the five-county region battling sleet.

In New Jersey, NJDOT's operation included 1,900 trucks on the roads.

In Delaware, DelDOT says conditions are slick - as expected. The agency has mobilized all of its crews and the agency is focused on the main roads.

For those who have to be out and about for that Monday morning commute, they say keeping it slow will be key.

"I'm use to driving in the weather as a healthcare worker. We have to be out all the time, so we leave extra early and we just drive cautiously," said Dee Gillespie of Camden.

The latest round of winter weather has also led to cancellation of hundreds of flights at Philadelphia International Airport.

Airport officials say 149 arrivals and 143 departures had been reported canceled as of 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Airport officials also said the Federal Aviation Administration had issued arrival delays for flights averaging more than four hours due to snow and ice.
