NORRISTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- PennDOT was working hard to stay ahead of the storm Wednesday as snow began to fall across the region.

Many areas saw rain early on before the changeover to snow.

That means a lot of work for the agency, which has 3,500 miles of pavement to take care of in the Philadelphia five-county area.

Some 332 trucks were loaded with salt on Tuesday night, and some came back Wednesday for even more salt.

This comes on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

PennDOT hopes drivers will be patient and flexible.

"We're asking them to look at their plans, maybe they can rearrange their plans, their travel plans until this event is over. If not, please be very careful" said PennDOT District Executive Lester Toaso.

Toaso also asked drivers to stay at least six car lengths behind snow plow trucks.
