NORRISTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- PennDOT expects this to be a plowing operation as the snow falls on Thursday.
This has been a brutal winter - not just on us but on the equipment and the salt supply.
John Krafczyk of PennDOT explains, "We will be deploying over 400 department and rented trucks for this event. And we will be doing our best to keep all roads passable by plowing and spreading salt."
Crews were moving salt around from stockpile and making sure the salt trucks and plows are in good shape to hit the roads yet again.
Krafczyk says, "It's been rough. It's been storm after storm. If you do the numbers, we've probably had by event three per week since January. So, we get one done, we start getting things cleaned up and ready and boom, we're right into another one."
Because of all the ice this season they've used up a considerable amount of salt on roads around the five county region.
In the 33 years PennDOT has kept records, this year ranks second for the amount of salt used - ranking only behind last year.
It's been taxing on the equipment and the crews operating out on the roads.
"I got to give them all the credit in the world," Krafczyk said. "They're tired and they want to go to Disney World where it's warm."
PennDOT expects roads to be snow-covered - perhaps with inches of snow at a time.
They advise you to allow plenty of time and give their trucks plenty of room.
