SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Despite the warmer temperatures and sunshine, road crews are still ready for whatever the forecast brings.

The salt yards were quiet Thursday afternoon. PennDOT will ramp up operations starting around 9 p.m. They have plenty of salt on hand, and are preparing for a salting, not a plowing, operation overnight into Friday.

PennDOT crews were out on area roads Thursday morning putting down brine and filling potholes before any flakes start to fly. About 225 PennDOT trucks will hit the highways and byways.

PennDOT calls this a "spreading storm," as in spreading around salt. And they have plenty on hand - about 95,000 tons of it.

PennDOT says temperatures will hover around freezing for most of the time the snow is falling, so there could be some slick spots. Best to give yourself a little extra time in the morning.
