PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Residents woke up to cars, trees, streets and sidewalks encased in ice Monday morning after a winter storm delivered a mix of snow, sleet then rain in the Delaware and Lehigh Valleys.

The icy conditions prompted hundreds of school districts across the region to announce delayed openings, as transportation officials urged caution on area roads.

Up to a quarter-inch of ice accumulated in parts of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and central and southern New Jersey.

Road crews across the region were clearing and treating the major highways.

Temperatures were expected to rise through Monday morning, but motorists were finding slick driving conditions where temperatures remained below freezing.

In New Jersey, New Jersey Transit was cross-honoring bus and rail tickets.
